When did you decide to go cruelty-free?
I began my transition into cruelty-free beauty roughly 2 years after I started wearing makeup. It started out as a gradual process, and I've been cruelty-free since 2009! Makeup was relatively easy: I started by integrating new cruelty-free products slowly to finally finding cruelty-free alternatives to my go-to cosmetics and staples. Skincare and body care, on the other hand, took a little bit more dedication! I was a big fan of Lush when I first made the switch, which helped, but I've since discovered so many more amazing cruelty-free brands.
What made you go cruelty-free?
I believe that the way we treat animals is a reflection of our culture and values as a society, and I want the world we live in to be better. Inflicting suffering to an animal -- and this includes animal testing -- is one of the worst and most heartbreaking forms of cruelty. There's no reason not to go cruelty-free.
It's easy to ignore something that's being kept as quiet as possible by an industry as huge as the cosmetics industry. The fact is: animal testing is a completely outdated, barbaric, and unnecessary practice, and unfortunately, it's still prevalent today, even in the USA. Once I became aware of this fact and found out how revolting animal testing is through research, I knew I had to do my part as a makeup junkie and animal-lover. I've been passionate about animal rights my whole life, and making the switch to cruelty-free cosmetics felt completely natural.
What are your favorite cruelty-free beauty products?
Some current makeup favorites are Illamasqua's Rich Liquid Foundation, NYX Soft Matte Lip Creams, and Rituel de Fille blushes. I also love and recommend Sonia Kashuk's synthetic brushes. I prefer more natural skin and body care, and some faves are John Masters Organics Rose & Apricot Hair Milk, Ren's Ultra Moisture Day Cream, and Kari Gran's Lip Whip. What are your favorite vegan foods and recipes?
I'll share my absolute favorite oatmeal breakfast with you: I use rolled oats and almond milk as a base, to which I generally add banana slices, walnuts, dried goji berries and/or cranberries and/or a fig, and lots of cinnamon. Sometimes I also add shredded coconut or some cacao! This is my breakfast on an almost-daily basis and it's amazing, healthy, and delicious!
Other vegan favorites include quinoa dishes with lots of veggies and tomato sauce, tofu-chickpea wraps, sweet potato fries (so good!), and avocado sushi. I also love juicing! Beet-apple-carrot juice is the best.
Do you have any advice or other information for committing to a cruelty-free lifestyle?
Surround yourself with positive vibes and like-minded people! For example I love to follow cruelty-free beauty blogs and vegan food blogs as opposed to the more mainstream beauty blogs. To keep informed, I really like OneGreenPlanet.org for both animal rights and environmental news. Peta2.com also occasionally has some good articles. My second suggestion is to research, research, research! Once you're aware of the facts, it's hard to go back. Another tip would be to print out or keep cruelty-free brands lists on your phone.
